Saturday 15th March 2014 saw our city of Leicester hosting its first Alternative & Burlesque fair
I had the privilege of attending, and though I was a little apprehensive at first wondering what it would be like, from the second I was greeted at the door and got my ticket, I felt very comfortable there, all faces were friendly and the atmosphere welcoming.
Inside was a vast array of stalls selling some excellent handmade fetish, alternative and burlesque crafts, from custom designed latex wear and other clothing, to sequinned nipple 'pasties', a cute little make up stand to give you glittery lips and eyelashes if you wished, and more besides - like fantastic original artwork, t shirts, backpacks, hats, masks, stockings, accessories, even sex toys and whips, crops, paddles, rope...
That wasn't all though - soon the shows began, starting with the gorgeous ladies of the 'blush' dance group, demonstrating the way they keep fit, literally with a twist (around a pole!) Introduced by charismatic compere Kieron, the fantastic demonstration had everyone clapping and cheering.
It was then lunchtime and sure enough round the corner was a tea room straight from a mad hatters tea party, all mismatched fine china, gorgeous cakes and plenty of other food being served, with lashings of tea. Very civilised (and delicious)
Through to another room and this one had a bigger stage and even more stalls selling brilliant stuff. I meandered around, shopping and chatting to various people, all of them lovely, friendly, interesting, and excited to be there.
Back to the smaller stage and it was time for a show by Dr Sketchy's, a team of fabulous fet folk who get the audience drawing and using their imagination - First Steve held a basic pose and then the gorgeous Liberty sat Christine Keeler style astride a chair and invited the sketchers to imagine what else she might be sitting on, and draw her on it. The results varied from a zebra to a lovely stockinged bottom, everyone seemed to love it and it got people interacting and laughing.
Then followed a burlesque style strip by the beautiful Fleur Du Mal, more 'blush' dancers in teeny tiny shorts and then shows by the Burlesque beauties Florence Fontaine and Slinky Sparkles. Florence entered the main stage to a chorus from the Jungle Book, handing out banana sweeties while shaking her curvy loveliness and then continuing her show to whoops and claps and cheers. Then it was Slinky Sparkles turn... a Hitchcock themed start running from The Birds, and then a fantastically saucy burlesque strip, all feather and thongs.
All in all it was just a really brilliant and interesting day and I'm really glad I went - here's to the next one!
Watch out soon for some further posts about a couple of the stallholders selling things of particular appeal to the BBW ladies of the world and also beautiful handmade goodies.
